چکیده
This paper reports the results of the analysis of the second ROSAT PSPC survey of M31 performed in summer 1992. We compare our results with those of the first survey, already published in Supper et al. (1997). Within the ∼ 10.7 deg field of view, 396 individual X-ray sources are detected in the second survey data, of which 164 are new detections. When combined with the first survey, this result in a total of 560 X-ray sources in the field of M31. Their (0.1 keV – 2.0 keV) fluxes range from 7× 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1 to 7.6× 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, and of these 560 sources, 55 are tentatively identified with foreground stars, 33 with globular clusters, 16 with supernova remnants, and 10 with radio sources and galaxies (including M32). A comparison with the results of the Einstein M31 survey reveals 491 newly detected sources, 11 long term variable sources, and 7 possible transient sources. Comparing the two ROSAT surveys, we come up with 34 long term variable sources and 8 transient candidates. For the M31 sources, the observed luminosities range from 4× 10 erg s−1 to 4× 10 erg s−1. The total (0.1 keV – 2.0 keV) luminosity of M31 is (3.4 ± 0.3) × 10 erg s−1, distributed approximately equally between the bulge and disk. Within the bulge region, the luminosity of a possible diffuse component combined with faint sources below the detection threshold is (2.0 ± 0.5) × 10 erg s−1. An explanation in terms of hot gaseous emission leads to a maximum total gas mass of (1.0± 0.3)× 10 M .

New SSS from the ROSAT PSPC
We have performed Chandra observations during the past 3 years of 5 of the M31 supersoft X-ray sources discovered with ROSAT. Surprisingly, only one of these sources has been detected, despite a predicted detection of about 20-80 counts for these sources. This has motivated a thorough check of the ROSAT M31 survey I data, including a relaxation of the hardness ratio requirement used to select s...
متن کاملA newly - discovered cataclysmic binary near the ROSAT galactic plane source RX J 1910 . 8 + 2856
We report the discovery of a new cataclysmic binary star from the ROSAT Galactic Plane Survey. The star has V >∼ 18.5 at minimum light and we have measured it as bright as V = 15.7. Spectroscopy shows broad hydrogen and helium emission lines; HeII λ4686 is not detected. Hα radial velocities yield an orbital period of 0.1429 ± 0.0004 d (3.430 ± 0.010 h). Timeseries photometry covering one orbita...
متن کاملThe ROSAT Deep Survey I. X-ray sources in the Lockman Field
The ROSATDeep Survey in the LockmanHole is the most sensitive X-ray survey performed to date, encompassing an exposure time of 207 ksec with the PSPC and a total of 1.32 Msec with the HRI aboard ROSAT. Here we present the complete catalogue of 50 X-ray sources with PSPC fluxes (0.5-2 keV) above 5.5 × 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1. The optical identifications are discussed in an accompanying paper (Schmidt...
متن کاملROSAT/Chandra observations of a bright transient in M81
We present a 10-year X-ray light curve and the spectra of a peculiar X-ray transient in the spiral galaxy M81. The source was below the detection limit of ROSAT PSPC before 1993, but it brightened substantially in 1993, with luminosities exceeding the Eddington limit of a 1.5-M⊙ compact accretor. It then faded and was not firmly detected in the ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations after 1994. The Ch...
متن کاملEvaluation of Source Counts and Upper Limits in Crowded Rosat Pspc Fields
We present a method for determining source counts, S/N, and upper limits at speciied positions in a crowded ROSAT PSPC eld using a combination of publicly available software packages. The algorithm is based on the so-called`Local DETECT' method of source detection, and improves upon currently available software, to permit a meaningful comparison of non-detections with detected sources. We also ...
